The 4th February 2009, eight new research centres was granted support from the Norwegian government and the Research Council of Norway. These eight centres will constitute a strong effort on some selected areas of renewable energy research and also and CO2 capture and storage.

The research centres are:

• Research Centre for Offshore Wind Technology (NOWITECH) - SINTEF Energiforskning AS
• The Norwegian Research Centre for Solar Cell Technology - IFE
• Bioenergy Innovation Centre (CenBio) - UMB
• Centre for Environmental Design of Renewable Energy (CEDREN) - SINTEF Energiforskning
• ZEB - The research Centre on Zero Emission Buildings - NTNU
• BIGCCS Centre - International CCS Research Centre - SINTEF Energiforskning
• Norwegian Centre for Offshore Wind Energy (NORCOWE) - CMR
• SUbsurface CO2 storage - Critical Elements and Superior Strategy - CMR

In 2011, three additional Centres for Environment-friendly Energy Research (FME) were launched:

• Centre for Sustainable Energy Studies (CenSES) - NTNU
• Strategic Challenges in International Climate and Energy Policy (CICEP) - CICERO
• Oslo Center for Research on Environmentally friendly Energy (CREE) - Frisch Centre

The centres will receive 200 million NOK in government support for research connected to Norwegian and international energy and climate policy with socio-scientific focus.
